Department Head, Mechanical Engineering

The Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) at Johns Hopkins University invites nominations and applications for the position of Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME). This is an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished scholar with leadership experience, in collaboration with a growing faculty and an enterprising Dean, to further strengthen an exceptional department at the nation’s first research university. The successful candidate will embody the intellectual distinction, entrepreneurial capacity, collaborative spirit, transparency, inclusiveness, and creativity that characterize the School’s culture, along with a scholarly record deserving appointment as tenured full professor at Johns Hopkins University. Serving a renewable five-year term, the Head will be appointed in an endowed position and will be a full-time tenured faculty member in ME. The Head will be encouraged to remain active in research, with strategic leadership of the department as their top priority.

The Department

The ME department has strengths in four established areas – thermo-fluids, mechanics and materials, robotics and controls, and mechanical engineering in biology and biomedicine – and has just nucleated a group in the emerging area of space engineering. The department is known for its collegial culture and shared governance practices.

ME faculty advance their research programs through several institutes that draw faculty from other WSE departments as well as the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Medicine. The Laboratory for Computational Sensing & Robotics (LCSR), the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI), the Institute for Nanobiotechnology (INBT), and the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI) are among the institutes with significant ME participation and leadership. HEMI and LCSR were founded by ME faculty, who have played leadership roles in several major efforts in the University including the new Data Science & AI Institute. In FY 2024-2025, the department’s sponsored-research expenditures topped $36M. Over the last decade, the department has grown to include over 30 tenured and tenure-track faculty, four teaching faculty, and 13 staff.

Senior Engineer

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR The Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a highly skilled Senior Engineer (Download PDF reader), Grade 27, to support operations at the County’s Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) in Dickerson, Maryland, and associated solid waste management programs. This is a technical, non-supervisory engineering role requiring strong analytical skills, contract management experience, and the ability to interpret and apply engineering principles within complex solid waste infrastructure systems. The successful candidate will have the following experience, knowledge, and skills: • Considerable experience as a project manager in civil, chemical, electrical, environmental, industrial, mechanical, or sys tems engineering. • Knowledge of contract administration principles, including scope development, proposal evaluation, contractor oversight, and invoice review. • Ability to independently conduct field investigations at industrial and solid waste facilities under conditions of moderate dis comfort and risk. • Ability to interpret and apply engineering and regulatory requirements related to solid waste, waste-to-energy operations, landfill permitting, and environmental compliance. • Strong analytical capability using engineering models and complex tracking spreadsheets for materials flow, operational costs, and project forecasting.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING The Senior Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of Montgomery County’s Re source Recovery Facility (RRF) and related solid waste systems. In this role, you will provide technical expertise, contract oversight, operations coordination, and engineering analysis for several major facility programs.

A distinguished, active publication record in top-tier business journals (e.g., ABDC A*, UTD 24, or FT 50 lists) demonstrating sustained scholarly leadership.
Proven track record of collaborative research, including a history of co-authoring with and mentoring early-career researchers.

Associate Professor of Practice in Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering

The Department of Industrial, Manufacturing & Systems Engineering (IMSE) in the Edward E. Support and supervise online students in the Doctor of Engineering program.
Convert existing systems and engineering management courses into an 8-week online format which will be delivered asynchronously.
Develop a year-round online course schedule that supports student progression through at least five courses annually, including two 8-week courses in the fall, two 8-week courses in the spring, and one 8-week course in the summer.
Hire, coordinate, and supervise part-time and full-time lecturers who teach online courses.
Ensure instructional quality and consistency across online offerings.
Support the future expansion of online instruction beyond the Doctor of Engineering program to include additional online graduate offerings, including online master's courses.
Contribute to the department's long-term staffing and online growth strategy in support of Texas Tech University's strategic plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

100% Teaching:

Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging online courses, particularly in the areas of financial risk, project management, quality assurance, engineering economy, and industrial distribution.
Develop course syllabi, select instructional materials, and design assessments such as exams, quizzes, papers, etc.
Assess student performance, provide timely feedback, and evaluate student learning outcomes to inform teaching practices and curriculum improvements.
Engage students in active learning, foster critical thinking skills, and provide opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and hands-on learning, including practicing engineers seeking further career advancement.
Provide academic support and guidance to students through office hours, feedback on assignments, and mentoring.
Adhere to university policies, academic integrity standards, and accreditation requirements related to teaching responsibilities.
Incorporate innovative teaching methods, technologies, and pedagogical approaches to enhance student learning and engagement.

Other information:

Adjunct Faculty positions are temporary appointments, assigned per semester and on an as-needed basis.
